Description

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a sterile form of the fungus known as the clinker polypore, belonging to the family Hymenochaetaceae. Biologically, it is a long-lived fungal growth that develops on the trunks of living trees as a result of infection by parasitic spores that enter through cracks or wounds in the bark.

The distribution range of Chaga covers primarily birch forests across the Northern Hemisphere. It is most commonly found in Russia, Northern Europe, Canada, and the northern United States. Its primary host is the birch tree, although it can occasionally parasitize alder, mountain ash, or elm trees in temperate climate zones.

Botanically, the structure appears as a dense, charcoal-like conk with a cracked, black, burnt-looking surface. The interior, known as the context, has a rich brown or rusty hue and becomes softer near the host wood. The growth of the conk is an extremely slow process, often spanning up to two decades, during which the fungus actively extracts nutrients from the tree, eventually causing the host to decline.

Cultivation and agrotechnical management of Chaga are unconventional due to its parasitic nature and the requirement for a mature living host. Commercial efforts typically focus on controlled inoculation of birch stands. This requires maintaining specific microclimatic conditions, such as high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures, to ensure successful fungal colonization of the host trees.

The economic value of Chaga lies primarily in its application within the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors. It is processed into extracts, powders, and teas widely used for its purported immune-boosting, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.
