Isachne myosotis, commonly referred to as a type of mouse-ear grass, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family (Poaceae). This species is a low-growing grass frequently found within natural pastures and wild ecosystems in specific tropical and subtropical climatic zones.
The plant originates from regions with tropical climates, primarily distributed throughout Southeast Asia and adjacent island territories. It favors moist habitats, often thriving along the edges of wetlands, riverbanks, and areas characterized by consistently high soil moisture levels.
Botanically, Isachne myosotis is characterized by creeping stems that are capable of rooting at the nodes, forming dense mats of turf. The leaves of the plant are typically lanceolate, while the inflorescence is an open or contracted panicle. The compact nature of its vegetative organs allows the plant to efficiently utilize space and spread rapidly in well-lit environments.
Regarding cultivation requirements, the crop has specific needs: it is highly sensitive to water deficit and prefers nutrient-rich loamy or alluvial soils. The optimal temperature for active growth ranges between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. The plant is unable to tolerate sub-zero temperatures, which restricts its agricultural cultivation area to the tropical zone.
The economic utility of this species is focused primarily on forage production. Although it is not a widely commercialized global crop, Isachne myosotis is valued as a component of natural forage for livestock in its native regions. Its primary characteristics include:
