Spreading knotweed (Koenigia divaricata, formerly known as Aconogonon divaricatum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. It is increasingly recognized in agriculture for its ability to produce significant biomass and its adaptability to diverse environmental conditions.

Originating from East Asia, including the Russian Far East, China, and Korea, the plant has successfully migrated to various temperate zones. Its natural habitat includes river valleys and meadow ecosystems, which informs its preference for stable moisture conditions and rich, well-drained soils during commercial cultivation.

Botanically, the species is defined by its tall, branching stems that can reach heights of up to two meters. The foliage is lush, with lanceolate leaves providing substantial canopy cover.
