Description
Garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) is a fast-growing, edible annual herb belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is widely recognized for its peppery, tangy flavor and its ability to germinate and reach harvest maturity in a very short timeframe, often within two weeks under optimal conditions.
The plant originates from regions spanning Ethiopia to Central and Western Asia. Throughout history, it has been cultivated across diverse climates worldwide. Because of its adaptability, it is currently one of the most common crops grown as microgreens, as well as being a staple in home gardens and professional vegetable production.
Botanically, garden cress features a basal rosette of pinnate leaves with an erect, branched stem. If allowed to mature, the plant produces small white or light pink flowers, eventually developing into small silicles containing seeds. The morphological diversity among varieties allows for different leaf shapes, from smooth to highly dissected edges.
Agrotechnical requirements focus on consistent moisture and cool to moderate temperatures. It is highly resistant to low temperatures, with seeds germinating at near-freezing points. However, to maintain vegetative growth and prevent bolting (flowering), growers must avoid extreme heat and ensure the soil remains moist and nutrient-rich, as drought stress negatively impacts flavor and texture.
