Veitch's leopard plant

Veitch's leopard plant (Ligularia veitchiana) is a striking perennial flowering plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Renowned for its bold, heart-shaped foliage and tall, candle-like racemes of yellow flowers, it serves as a dramatic structural element in shaded garden environments.

Originating from the mountainous regions of China, this species is naturally adapted to cool, moist environments. In its native habitat, it is typically found near streams and in damp woodland settings, which dictates its specific needs when cultivated in home gardens or landscapes.

The botanical structure of this plant consists of a basal rosette of large, deeply veined, dark green leaves. The sturdy flower spikes can rise up to 1.5 meters, carrying clusters of golden-yellow, daisy-like florets. These blooms generally appear in mid-to-late summer, providing a vibrant contrast to the lush green foliage.

Successful cultivation requires rich, consistently moist soil and a location in partial to full shade. Direct midday sun is detrimental to the plant, often causing the broad leaves to wilt and scorched edges to appear.
