Star magnolia

Star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is a deciduous shrub or small tree belonging to the Magnoliaceae family. It is widely cultivated for its spectacular display of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that bloom on bare branches in early spring. It is considered one of the most popular choices for residential landscapes due to its relatively small size and high ornamental value.

The plant originates from the island of Honshu in Japan, where it grows in woodland areas. Over time, it has been successfully introduced to various temperate regions across the globe. Today, it is a staple of botanical gardens and private landscapes, prized for its ability to provide early seasonal interest in garden beds or as a centerpiece in small courtyards.

Botanically, the star magnolia is known for its slow growth rate, typically reaching 2.5 to 3 meters in height. Its flowers consist of numerous white or light pink, strap-like tepals that radiate from the center.
