Marsilea auriculata is a perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic spore-bearing plant belonging to the family Marsileaceae. It is often referred to as water clover due to its distinctive leaf structure, which consists of four leaflets that either float on the surface or stand erect when the plant grows in shallow water or on mudflats.

This species is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. In its natural habitat, it thrives in damp areas along riverbanks, marshes, and floodplains. The plant is highly dependent on high humidity and consistent water levels, making it a critical component of its native wetland ecosystems.

Botanically, it is classified as a water fern featuring creeping rhizomes from which delicate petioles with leaf blades emerge. Its root system is relatively shallow, allowing the plant to anchor effectively in soft, organic-rich substrates. Sporocarps, which are the reproductive structures, typically develop at the base of the leaf stalks and require specific environmental triggers for germination.

Successful cultivation of Marsilea auriculata requires bright, diffused light, water temperatures ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius, and a nutrient-rich substrate with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. The plant responds well to the addition of trace mineral fertilizers, although excessive nitrogen levels can lead to rapid, leggy growth or root decay if the substrate lacks adequate oxygenation.

The primary use of Marsilea auriculata is in the field of ornamental horticulture and aquascaping. It is highly valued for creating lush, carpet-like ground cover in the foreground of aquariums and paludariums. Despite its ornamental appeal, the plant can be susceptible to various root rot pathogens and herbivorous pests, such as certain aquatic snails, which can cause significant damage to the delicate foliage.
