Southern adderstongue (lat. Ophioglossum vulgatum) is a distinctive perennial fern belonging to the Ophioglossaceae family. Unlike conventional ferns, this species is characterized by a very simplified morphology, often making it difficult to spot in the field. It is considered a primitive, relic species that has survived for millions of years with minimal changes to its biological structure.
The plant is found across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and parts of North America. In an agricultural context, it is typically not a cultivated crop but is observed in natural meadows, pastures, and damp forest clearings. Its presence serves as a crucial indicator for ecologists and agronomists, signaling that the land has not been subjected to intensive tillage or excessive chemical fertilization.

Due to its slow growth cycle and strict dependence on undisturbed soil microbiology, it is not suitable for mass cultivation.
