The plant is native to the western regions of North America. Its natural range extends through California, Oregon, Washington, and parts of British Columbia. It thrives in open, sunny environments such as vernal pools, seasonal meadows, and grasslands that provide the necessary moisture cycles for its development.

Botanically, Orthocarpus attenuatus features an erect stem growing up to 40 centimeters in height. Its leaves are thin and lance-shaped.
