Unlike true parasitic plants, it is a hemiparasite, meaning it can perform photosynthesis while also extracting minerals and water from the roots of neighboring host plants to thrive in challenging environments.
The plant is native to North America, widely distributed across the western and central prairies of the United States and Canada. It is perfectly adapted to semi-arid climates, where it colonizes open meadows, hillsides, and rocky slopes, demonstrating high resilience to temperature fluctuations and limited precipitation.
Botanically, it is characterized by its stiff, erect stems growing up to 30–40 cm, accompanied by narrow, simple leaves. Its most distinctive feature is the dense terminal spike of flowers, which are characterized by vivid yellow bracts. It is a heliophyte, necessitating full sun exposure for optimal growth.
