Pandanus spiralis

Pandanus spiralis, commonly known as the common screw pine, is a perennial tropical plant belonging to the Pandanaceae family. It is distinct for its architectural appearance, featuring spirally arranged, sharp-edged leaves that grow from a thick, woody stem supported by adventitious prop roots.

The species is native to Northern Australia and Western Australia. It thrives in various environments, including coastal dunes, rocky escarpments, and riverine habitats. The plant is highly resilient, capable of enduring prolonged dry seasons, which makes it an important botanical component of its native ecosystem.

Botanically, Pandanus spiralis is dioecious, meaning male and female reproductive structures occur on separate individual plants. Its fruit, often resembling a large pineapple, consists of numerous woody drupes. The leaves are tough and fibrous, providing the plant with excellent structural integrity in windy coastal zones.

Agricultural success depends on providing well-drained soil and plenty of direct sunlight. While the plant is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from consistent moisture during the growing phase. Soil pH should ideally be neutral to slightly acidic, and the plant requires protection from frost as it is highly sensitive to cold temperatures.

The crop holds significant economic and cultural value:

Proper spacing and occasional pruning of dead leaves are recommended to maintain plant health and prevent the spread of localized infections.
