Belonging to the Rosaceae family, this fruit tree combines the best traits of both parents: the winter hardiness and disease resistance of the sour cherry with the large size, sweetness, and vigor of the sweet cherry.

Originating from hybridization efforts in Europe, where both parent species are common, the Duke cherry has gained popularity in various temperate regions across the globe. It is highly valued in pomology for its ability to produce high-quality dessert fruits in climates where traditional sweet cherries might struggle to survive harsh winters or spring frost events.

Botanically, these trees exhibit traits intermediate between their parents. The foliage is typically glossier and denser than that of sour cherries, while the flowers are larger and more showy.
