Siberian spikemoss

Selaginella sibirica

Description

Siberian spikemoss (Latin: Selaginella sibirica) is a perennial, spore-bearing plant belonging to the Selaginellaceae family. As a highly specialized member of the lycophyte group, this species is noted for its ability to survive in environments that would be detrimental to many other vascular plants.

The native range of Selaginella sibirica is predominantly located across the northern regions of Eurasia, stretching from Siberia to the Far East and parts of Mongolia. It is typically found in alpine and subarctic zones, thriving in rocky crevices, gravel slopes, and tundra landscapes, where it colonizes barren ground with remarkable resilience.

Botanically, the plant features a dense, creeping growth habit with stems covered in tiny, scale-like microphylls. Its reproductive organs, known as strobili, are positioned at the tips of the shoots and house the spores. A key biological adaptation is its tolerance to desiccation, which allows the plant to enter a dormant state during periods of drought or freezing temperatures.

Successful cultivation requires mimicry of its natural habitat. Key requirements include:

  • highly permeable, rocky substrate with minimal organic material;
  • consistent atmospheric humidity levels;
  • bright but indirect lighting, as direct sunlight can scorch the delicate foliage;
  • avoidance of standing water, which can trigger fungal pathogens.

While not a major commercial crop, Siberian spikemoss is valued in specialty horticulture for rock gardens, terrariums, and botanical collections. In terms of maintenance, growers should be vigilant against pests like spider mites, which can thrive in indoor conditions. Proper ventilation is the primary defense against bacterial and fungal infections that often plague the dense mats of this species.
