Sterculia urens, commonly known as the kulu tree or ghost tree, is a deciduous species belonging to the Malvaceae family. It is a medium-sized tree that grows up to 15 meters tall, distinguished by its papery, peeling bark which provides a smooth, white appearance. The tree is native to the dry tropical forests of India and parts of Southeast Asia.

The species is perfectly adapted to arid environments. It thrives on rocky terrains and dry hillsides where water retention in the soil is extremely low. This resilience makes it a valuable crop for agroforestry projects aimed at restoring vegetation in degraded, drought-prone lands where more demanding plant species fail to survive.

Botanically, the tree features large, palmately lobed leaves and small, yellowish flowers arranged in panicles. The common name "urens" refers to the stinging hairs present on the young shoots and fruit pods, which can cause skin irritation. The tree enters a dormant phase during the dry season, during which it sheds its leaves to conserve moisture.

From an agricultural standpoint, Sterculia urens requires minimal maintenance. It prefers well-drained soils and full sun exposure. Propagation is typically achieved through seeds, and young trees require care in the initial stages of establishment. Once matured, the tree is highly drought-tolerant and requires almost no supplemental irrigation, making it a low-input crop.
