Esparto grass, scientifically known as Stipa tenacissima, is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized for its robust, fibrous structure, which has made it a valuable raw material for centuries in semi-arid environments.
The plant is native to the western Mediterranean region, primarily covering parts of North Africa and Southern Europe, notably Spain. It thrives in steppes and rocky, arid landscapes where water scarcity and poor soil quality limit the cultivation of traditional crops.
Botanically, esparto develops in dense, clumped tussocks reaching up to one meter in height. Its leaves are thin, stiff, and involute, an adaptation that allows the plant to reduce water loss. The extensive root system is crucial for soil stabilization and drought survival in harsh climates.
Agricultural management for Stipa tenacissima is characterized by its low-maintenance requirements. It grows well in poor, calciferous, or sandy soils and does not require intensive irrigation. However, the plant is susceptible to pests such as specific aphids and certain fungal pathogens if exposed to excessive humidity.
The main industrial utility of esparto lies in the pulp and paper industry, where its long fibers are processed into high-quality stationery and specialty paper.
