Description

Nassella tussock (scientific name Stipa trichotoma) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. In agricultural terms, it is considered one of the world's most aggressive invasive weeds. It is strictly not a crop but a major target for biosecurity and land management agencies due to its potential to devastate productive agricultural land.

Native to South America, specifically Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, this species has successfully invaded various temperate regions worldwide, including parts of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Its ability to thrive outside its native range is attributed to its high seed production and tolerance to diverse environmental stressors that inhibit native flora.

Botanically, it forms dense, tussock-like clumps that can reach significant heights. Its leaves are narrow, extremely tough, and fibrous due to high silica content, making them unpalatable and virtually indigestible for livestock. The plant produces massive quantities of seeds in panicles, which are highly mobile and can be spread across vast landscapes by wind, water, and animal movement.

The plant demonstrates remarkable environmental resilience. It flourishes in low-fertility soils and is highly drought-tolerant, often outcompeting nutritious pasture grasses in degraded landscapes. It is also remarkably resistant to most standard livestock grazing pressures, which often creates a feedback loop where the weed colonizes areas where selective grazing has reduced the abundance of palatable species.

In a farming context, Nassella tussock is exclusively detrimental. It provides no forage value and can cause physical injury to livestock, as its seeds with sharp calli can penetrate the eyes, skin, and mouths of sheep and cattle. Infestations lead to severe economic loss, including the degradation of land value and the high costs associated with chemical control and manual eradication efforts.
