Tangelo (lat. Citrus × tangelo) is a hybrid fruit belonging to the family Rutaceae, resulting from the cross-breeding of a tangerine (mandarin) and a grapefruit or pomelo. This crop was developed to combine the intense sweetness and easy peeling of mandarins with the refreshing size and juiciness characteristic of grapefruits.

Originating from breeding programs in the United States, specifically in Florida, tangelo cultivation is currently established in various subtropical regions worldwide. The tree thrives in warm climates characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. It requires significant protection from frost, as the crop is not well-adapted to temperatures below freezing, which can damage its foliage and developing fruit.

The botany of the tangelo tree includes evergreen, glossy, dark green foliage and a vigorous, spreading growth habit. The fruit is easily recognizable by its shape, which often features a distinct protuberance at the stem end, frequently referred to as a neck. The pulp is highly flavorful, often less acidic than a grapefruit, and the rind is generally easy to peel, making it a popular choice for fresh consumption.

Agricultural requirements for tangelo are similar to those of other citrus varieties. They require well-draining, deep, fertile soils with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.0. Regular irrigation is critical during the flowering and fruit-setting stages. Fertilization schedules should focus on balanced NPK ratios, with supplementary micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese to prevent chlorosis.
