A Tangor is an interspecific hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of a mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). It belongs to the Rutaceae family. The fruit is highly valued for its intense flavor profile, which combines the complex sweetness of an orange with the ease of peeling and the characteristic aroma of a mandarin.

The origins of commercial tangor varieties trace back to extensive citrus breeding programs in subtropical regions. Currently, the primary cultivation areas are located in the United States (Florida), Mediterranean countries, and parts of South America. These trees thrive in warm, subtropical climates where temperature fluctuations are minimal throughout the year.

Botanically, the tangor tree is an evergreen plant characterized by dense foliage and deep green, leathery leaves. The flowers are typically fragrant and white, promoting fruit set under suitable cross-pollination conditions. The fruits vary in size but are generally oblate, featuring a vibrant rind that adheres moderately to the juicy, segmented pulp inside.

Agricultural requirements for tangor cultivation focus on well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Irrigation must be managed precisely to avoid waterlogging, which significantly increases the risk of root pathogens. Proper pruning is essential to improve airflow within the canopy and ensure deep sunlight penetration, which enhances the overall fruit quality and sugar content.

Economically, tangors are primarily sold as fresh table fruit due to their excellent taste and appearance. Some varieties are also processed into high-quality juices. Major pests threatening these orchards include citrus whiteflies, aphids, and various mite species. Pathogens such as phytophthora (root rot) and anthracnose are common risks, necessitating integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain tree health.
