Citron (Latin: Citrus medica L.) is a large, fragrant, evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is recognized as one of the original species from which most other modern citrus fruits were derived through hybridization. The fruit is distinctly characterized by a thick, leathery rind and a relatively small amount of pulp.
The plant is native to South and Southeast Asia, specifically the region of Northeast India and Myanmar. Currently, the citron is widely cultivated across the Mediterranean basin, parts of the Middle East, and specific regions of the United States. It requires a warm, frost-free climate, as the tree is highly sensitive to cold and does not tolerate even mild freezing temperatures.
Botanically, the citron tree features irregular branches with short, stiff thorns. The leaves are large, pale to dark green, and serrated. The fruits are oblong or oval, often reaching impressive sizes with a wrinkled or bumpy surface texture. The rind is exceptionally aromatic and rich in essential oils, which serves as the primary reason for the plant's economic value.
Agrotechnical requirements for growing citron involve well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic profile. The plant demands high levels of sunlight and consistent moisture throughout the growing season. In indoor or greenhouse environments, supplemental lighting and strict temperature control are necessary to ensure the plant's healthy development and fruit production.
Economically, the citron is highly valued in the food processing industry, particularly for the production of candied peel (succade), which is a key ingredient in many traditional holiday pastries. The peel is also processed to extract essential oils used in the perfume and cosmetic industries. Furthermore, the fruit holds significant cultural and religious importance in various global traditions.
Regarding health and protection, the citron is susceptible to common citrus pests such as scale insects, spider mites, and aphids. Pathological issues include root rot caused by poor soil drainage and citrus tristeza virus. Effective management relies on maintaining high cultural standards, proper sanitation, and the use of integrated pest management strategies to ensure a stable and healthy yield.
