Description

Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a prominent saprotrophic fungus belonging to the Pleurotaceae family. It is globally recognized as one of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms due to its rapid growth cycle, high yield, and ability to be grown on a diverse range of agricultural waste products.

Native to temperate and subtropical forests across the globe, Pleurotus ostreatus naturally decomposes woody debris and damaged trees. In modern agricultural practice, it has been successfully adapted for intensive indoor cultivation using substrates like straw, cottonseed hulls, coffee grounds, and sawdust, which are typically pasteurized to reduce competitive microbial growth.

The botanical structure of the oyster mushroom consists of a cap ranging from oyster-shell shape to funnel shape, with gills running down the stalk. Its mycelium is highly vigorous, characterized by its ability to colonize substrates rapidly. This aggressive growth strategy is a significant advantage, allowing the mushroom to outcompete many common pathogens during the colonization phase.

Climatic requirements are specific: the incubation phase requires temperatures between 20–24°C, while the fruiting phase requires a drop to 12–18°C. Relative humidity must be strictly maintained at 80–90%. Furthermore, although the mushroom does not require light for mycelial growth, high-quality fruiting bodies depend on adequate exposure to indirect light during the development stage.

Oyster mushrooms are primarily utilized in the culinary industry and for the production of fungal-based health supplements. Despite their resilience, growers must manage common threats such as Trichoderma (green mold), bacterial blotch, and various mushroom flies.
