Viburnum x rhytidophylloides, commonly known as Lantanaphyllum viburnum, is a robust hybrid resulting from the crossbreeding of Viburnum rhytidophyllum and Viburnum utile. Belonging to the Adoxaceae family, this plant is highly regarded in horticulture for its semi-evergreen foliage and notable cold tolerance. It serves as an excellent structural plant in gardens where a combination of evergreen presence and winter hardiness is required.
Botanically, this shrub is characterized by its large, elongated, and deeply rugose (wrinkled) leaves. The upper surface of the foliage is a deep, lustrous green, while the underside features a dense, felt-like yellowish-gray indumentum. During the late spring, the plant produces large, flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers, which are followed by decorative clusters of berries that transition from red to a glossy black as they mature.
Regarding climate and soil requirements, Lantanaphyllum viburnum performs best in well-drained, moderately fertile soils with consistent moisture. While it shows good adaptability to various pH levels, it thrives in slightly acidic to neutral environments. The shrub is quite versatile concerning light conditions, successfully growing in both full sun and partial shade, although it requires protection from harsh, desiccating winter winds to maintain its evergreen leaves.
