Description

The genus Acaulospora is not a plant pathogen or a disease agent. It is a well-known group of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that live in the soil and form symbiotic associations with the roots of the vast majority of terrestrial plants. These fungi are essential components of a healthy soil ecosystem and are highly beneficial for agricultural productivity.

These fungi develop specialized structures within the root cortex known as arbuscules. Through these structures, the fungus provides the plant with essential nutrients, particularly phosphorus and micronutrients, which are absorbed from the soil beyond the reach of plant roots. In return, the plant supplies the fungus with carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis.

The presence of Acaulospora is documented in a wide variety of crop species, including cereals, legumes, and various horticultural plants. Mycorrhizal colonization significantly enhances plant vigor, improves nutrient uptake efficiency, and increases tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity.

The proliferation of Acaulospora is favored by sustainable agricultural practices that minimize soil disturbance. Excessive reliance on synthetic fertilizers, particularly high phosphorus inputs, can suppress the formation of mycorrhizal symbioses, as the plant no longer "needs" the fungus to acquire nutrients that are readily available in the soil solution.

Instead of seeking "protection" or control methods, modern agronomy focuses on managing the soil environment to encourage these beneficial symbionts:

  • Reducing mechanical tillage to preserve the fungal mycelial network in the soil.
  • Maintaining living roots through the use of cover crops during the off-season.
  • Avoiding the excessive use of fungicides that may have negative impacts on non-target soil fungi.
  • Applying mycorrhizal inoculants in low-fertility soils to boost the natural colonization of crop roots.
