Acremonium celery wilt is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Acremonium apii. This fungus primarily affects the vascular system of celery plants, disrupting the transport of water and essential nutrients. It is a significant concern for growers, as it can lead to severe yield losses in both commercial and domestic vegetable gardening.

The primary host for this pathogen is the celery plant (Apium graveolens). The fungus is soil-borne, meaning it survives in the soil and on crop debris for extended periods. When conditions are favorable, the fungal spores germinate and invade the root system, colonizing the plant's xylem and eventually spreading through the crown and stalks.

Early symptoms of infection include chlorosis of the lower leaves, which gradually spreads upwards. As the disease progresses, the leaves become withered and necrotic. A definitive sign of the disease is the brown discoloration of the vascular tissue inside the stems and the roots, which confirms that the nutrient uptake system is compromised.

The development of Acremonium apii is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures. Poor soil drainage and overcrowding of plants create a microenvironment that facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen. Once introduced into a field, the fungus can persist for several years, making long-term soil management essential.

Effective management and prevention of the disease require an integrated approach:

  • Strict crop rotation, avoiding celery and related Umbelliferae crops for at least three to four years.
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, which favors fungal activity.
  • Strict sanitation measures, including the removal and destruction of all infected plant materials after harvest.
  • Using high-quality, disease-free seeds or transplants from reputable suppliers.
  • Monitoring fields regularly and applying appropriate fungicides if the disease is detected early in the growth stage.
