The order Acrospermales comprises a group of fungi that are primarily recognized for their specialized saprotrophic or weakly pathogenic behavior within plant ecosystems. Belonging to the class Dothideomycetes, these fungi form elongated, needle-like perithecia that are distinctive indicators of their presence. They are typically found on the stems and leaf sheaths of various grasses and woody debris.

The causal agents are fungi that act as opportunistic pathogens. The disease manifests as a degradation of plant tissue, particularly in instances where the host plant's immunity is compromised due to environmental stress or previous insect damage. This type of infestation is often overlooked until the fungi start producing visible fruiting bodies on the surface of the plant.

Host crops mainly include cereals, grasses, and occasionally broad-leaved species. While they may not always cause immediate plant death, their ability to colonize living tissue during prolonged wet periods can lead to tissue chlorosis and general plant decline. The infection density often correlates with the availability of organic debris that acts as a reservoir for the fungi.

Symptoms of infection are defined by the development of minute, dark, elongated structures (ascostromata) appearing on the epidermis of stems and leaves. The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Under these conditions, the pathogen spreads rapidly, with spores being easily disseminated by wind and water splashing during rainfall.

The economic impact of Acrospermales is reflected in the reduction of overall crop health, quality, and potential storage issues if harvested during humid weather. Protective measures include:

  • Effective crop residue management through deep plowing.
  • Practicing crop rotation to break the pathogen's lifecycle.
  • Maintaining optimal stand density to ensure adequate aeration of the field.
  • Application of specialized fungicides if monitoring indicates a high level of disease pressure.
