Agaricostilbomycetes is a class of basidiomycete fungi that contains various species, some of which act as significant plant pathogens. The host range for these pathogens includes various ornamental trees, shrubs, and certain agricultural crops. The fungi generally target the vascular system and structural tissues of the plant. Spread typically occurs through the dispersal of spores by wind, splashing water, or physical contact with tools that have been contaminated, making hygiene in the field or greenhouse extremely important.
Harmfulness and control measures are significant enough that preventative strategies should be prioritized. Protection efforts should include consistent monitoring for early signs of disease, rapid removal and destruction of infected plant material, and the application of fungicides where appropriate. Maintaining optimal plant health through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation helps minimize the risk of severe infection and recovery potential.
