Agaricostilbum is a genus of fungi recognized for causing specific wood decay and bark lesions in woody plant species. These fungi are classified as basidiomycetes and are known for producing characteristic stalked sporocarps or synnemata. As opportunistic pathogens, they primarily colonize trees that have been previously stressed by environmental factors, mechanical damage, or secondary pest infestations.

This pathogen specifically targets various deciduous trees, making it a concern in forestry, nurseries, and managed orchard environments. While it often acts as a saprotroph on decaying wood, in favorable conditions, it transitions to a parasitic phase. By infiltrating the bark, the fungus compromises the host plant's vascular integrity, which can lead to significant physiological decline.

Diagnostic symptoms of Agaricostilbum infection include the development of tiny, pale-colored, club-shaped or stalked structures emerging from the bark surface. These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus. As the infection progresses, the underlying wood undergoes softening and discoloration. Localized necrosis is common, and if left untreated, the lesions may expand, potentially girdling smaller branches or trunks.

Development and spread are highly dependent on high moisture levels and poor air circulation. High humidity facilitates the rapid production and dispersal of fungal spores, which are easily carried by wind, rain splashes, and insects. Beetles and other bark-boring insects act as major vectors, transporting the fungus directly into healthy plant tissues during feeding or nesting activities.
