Description

It is important to clarify that Agaricus species are not traditional plant pathogens that attack living plant tissues. However, in professional greenhouse environments, their presence is often viewed as a symptom of poor substrate hygiene or improper environmental control, which can negatively impact the health of crop plants.

The biological nature of these fungi is that of a saprotroph. They thrive in environments rich in organic matter. When introduced into crop production systems, they compete with plants for resources, which effectively turns them into a biological nuisance that can threaten the stability of the root zone environment.

Crops most affected by Agaricus proliferation are vegetables and ornamentals grown in soilless or organic substrates. Greenhouse vegetables, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, are particularly sensitive to the chemical and physical changes in the root zone caused by the aggressive spread of mushroom mycelium.

Symptoms of infestation include the rapid spread of dense, white, thread-like mycelium across the substrate surface and into the root zone. This growth can lead to nutrient depletion, waterlogging of the substrate, and the development of metabolic byproducts that inhibit root growth and may lead to plant chlorosis.

  • Excessive moisture and poor drainage in containers.
  • Usage of non-sterilized organic substrates or compost.
  • Temperatures favoring fungal growth (+18°C to +24°C).
  • Inadequate air circulation in the greenhouse environment.

Effective management and prevention rely heavily on the sterilization of growing media using steam or appropriate chemical disinfectants. Maintaining consistent hygiene protocols, ensuring excellent drainage, and avoiding overly rich, raw organic fertilizers are the most critical strategies to prevent the unwanted growth of Agaricus in production areas.
