It is important to clarify that the copper-brown agaric (Agaricus cupreobrunneus) is not a plant pathogen; it is a saprotrophic fungus. It is often misidentified as a disease agent because it acts as an aggressive competitor in mushroom farms and thrives in nutrient-rich soils, potentially outcompeting agricultural crops for available organic resources.

As a saprotroph, the fungus plays a role in the natural decomposition of organic matter. In industrial mushroom cultivation, however, it is classified as a "weed fungus." Its presence in the substrate is problematic because it rapidly colonizes the compost, utilizing the nutrients required for the growth of the commercially grown species, leading to yield losses.

The fungus develops primarily in well-manured soils, open pastures, and agricultural settings with high nitrogen levels. Conditions that favor its spread include the application of partially decomposed manure or poor pasteurization of the mushroom growing substrate, which allows its spores to survive and germinate ahead of the commercial mycelium.

Symptoms in the field are characterized by the emergence of fruit bodies with a distinct copper-brown, scaly cap. In cultivation systems, the primary sign of infestation is the rapid colonization of the substrate by mycelium that is morphologically different from the cultivated strain, accompanied by a decrease in the production of the intended mushroom variety.

Protection and prevention strategies focus on hygiene and substrate management. Effective control relies on:

  • Strict pasteurization of the compost to eliminate competing spores.
  • Maintaining proper sanitation standards within the facility.
  • Ensuring that organic fertilizers used on open fields are fully mature to avoid creating ideal colonization conditions.
  • Preventing cross-contamination of equipment between contaminated and clean zones.

By ensuring that the growth medium is optimized for the intended crop and maintaining stringent environmental controls, the risk of Agaricus cupreobrunneus infestation can be minimized. Since it is not a direct threat to plant health, systemic fungicides are generally not recommended or necessary; focus should remain on competitive exclusion through superior cultivation practices.
