Agaricus lanipes is a mushroom species known in the mushroom industry as a problematic competitor rather than a cultivated crop. While it shares the same genus as the common button mushroom, its presence in a growing room indicates a failure in sanitation or substrate preparation protocols.
The fungus acts as a biological competitor, rapidly colonizing the substrate prepared for the commercial strain of Agaricus bisporus. It consumes vital nutrients and space, effectively suppressing the development of the intended crop and significantly reducing the overall yield per square meter.
Symptoms of infestation are identified by the emergence of unwanted fruit bodies characterized by a distinct woolly or fibrous texture on the stipe. Furthermore, the mycelial network of the competitor is more aggressive and dense, which prevents the proper pinning of the commercially grown mushrooms.
The development of Agaricus lanipes is primarily linked to inadequate pasteurization of the growing substrate. When temperatures are not uniform or sufficient during the cook-out phase, the spores of this competitor remain viable, allowing them to outcompete the commercial spawn when the environment is ready for inoculation.
