Agaricus moellerianus is a fungal species recognized in agricultural pathology for its potential to act as a pathogen causing root-related decline in various herbaceous crops. While traditionally viewed as a saprotrophic species, under high-density planting conditions, it can compromise plant health by interfering with nutrient uptake and causing necrotic lesions in the root zone.
The disease is caused by the basidiomycete fungus Agaricus moellerianus. The primary pathology involves root and crown rot. The fungus infects the root system by utilizing enzymes to degrade root tissues, which significantly impairs the vascular functions of the affected plants and leads to gradual physiological collapse.
This pathogen primarily targets vegetable crops grown in intensive greenhouse environments and plants established in soils enriched with heavy organic matter. It thrives in high-moisture conditions, making crops like lettuce or various indoor herbs particularly susceptible if soil management is not strictly controlled.
Symptoms of an Agaricus moellerianus infection are often subtle at the onset, characterized by stunted growth and yellowing of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the root system shows evident signs of browning and decay. If the humidity levels remain high, a white mycelial mat may develop around the plant stem at the soil line.
Development and spread are facilitated by poor soil aeration, stagnant water, and the excessive use of non-composted manure. Effective prevention strategies focus on optimizing soil pH, ensuring excellent drainage, and avoiding over-fertilization with organic debris. Chemical control is limited to preventive soil drenching with appropriate fungicides when environmental conditions are conducive to fungal growth.
