Description
The Maple fieldcap (Agrocybe acericola) is a wood-decay fungus that acts primarily as a saprotroph but can exhibit parasitic characteristics on weakened deciduous trees. This pathogen targets the woody tissues of the host, leading to structural instability and long-term decline of the affected plant.
It predominantly attacks members of the Acer (maple) genus, although its distribution extends to various other broad-leaved trees in temperate climate zones. The risk of infection is significantly higher in old-growth stands or urban trees subjected to environmental stressors such as soil compaction, pollution, or drought.
Key symptoms of infestation include the emergence of fruit bodies on the bark, trunks, or roots of the host. Internally, the fungus induces a form of white rot, where the lignin and cellulose components are broken down, resulting in a brittle wood structure that significantly increases the probability of mechanical failure and stem snapping.
The development and spread of Agrocybe acericola are facilitated by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus colonizes trees through spores that enter via entry points like broken limbs, frost cracks, or deep bark crevices. Once established, the mycelial network penetrates deep into the heartwood, progressively weakening the tree from the inside out.
Effective management and protection strategies focus on preventive arboriculture. This includes maintaining tree vigor through adequate irrigation, minimizing physical injuries to the trunk, and ensuring proper sanitation by removing infected woody debris. In cases where the tree is severely compromised, structural evaluation is necessary to mitigate safety risks to surrounding areas.
