Field agrocybe (Agrocybe arvalis) is a species of fungus that, while primarily saprotrophic, can exhibit opportunistic pathogenic behavior in agricultural ecosystems. It lives within the soil and thrives where organic matter is abundant, potentially impacting the roots of various crop species if conditions become favorable for the fungus to colonize living tissue.
The disease mechanism involves the fungal mycelium colonizing the rhizosphere. By feeding on soil organic matter, the fungus can grow in dense patches; if this growth occurs near the root zone of a crop, it can restrict nutrient uptake and cause physiological stress, which often manifests as a secondary infection following physical root damage.
Symptoms of infestation often include stunted development, chlorosis (yellowing) of lower leaves, and wilting during periods of peak transpiration. In some cases, the presence of small fruiting bodies near the plant base serves as a clear visual indicator that the fungus is actively decomposing surrounding matter, which may be directly adjacent to the root system.
Environmental conditions for development are typically characterized by high soil moisture levels and poor drainage. The fungus proliferates in soils with significant amounts of un-decomposed plant residues, such as crop stubble, which provides the necessary carbon source for the mycelium to establish a strong presence in the field.
Management and prevention focus on disrupting the fungus's habitat. Key practices include thorough incorporation of crop residues into the soil to ensure rapid decomposition, maintaining adequate soil aeration, and following crop rotation sequences that break the life cycle of soil-borne pathogens. Fungicidal soil treatment may be considered in extreme cases where crop loss is significant.
