Carbon-loving Agrocybe (Latin: Agrocybe carbonicola) is a species of saprotrophic fungus from the Strophariaceae family. It is distinct for its ecological niche, as it thrives exclusively in environments enriched with charcoal and wood ash, frequently appearing in sites where organic material has been burned.
The pathogen is a saprotrophic basidiomycete that utilizes the specific chemical environment provided by charred matter. In agricultural and forestry contexts, it acts as a competitor to beneficial soil organisms. By occupying the space left by ash deposits, the fungus creates a monoculture of its mycelium, which can interfere with the nutrient uptake of nearby young plants.
Plants affected are primarily seedlings in forest nurseries and vegetation in areas where large-scale burning of biomass has taken place. The fungus is most frequently observed in areas with high levels of carbonaceous residues, where soil pH may be temporarily altered, affecting the root development of sensitive herbaceous or woody species.
Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of small, brownish-yellow fruiting bodies from ash-rich soil surfaces. The underground mycelium forms a dense network that can create a hydrophobic layer in the soil, potentially leading to localized drought stress or nutrient deficiencies in plants whose roots are physically entangled with the fungal mass.

By promoting sustainable decomposition methods like composting, farmers can naturally prevent the establishment of Agrocybe carbonicola.
