Unlike primary pathogens, it does not typically infect healthy, vigorous trees, preferring instead to colonize already weakened or dead plant tissues.
The causative agent of wood degradation in this case is the fungal mycelium, which secretes enzymes capable of breaking down complex organic polymers such as lignin and cellulose. This process is essential for nutrient cycling in nature but is viewed as a form of wood rot when it occurs in decorative or fruit-bearing trees, as it accelerates the structural weakening of the wood.
