Agrocybe firma is a species of wood-decay fungus that belongs to the Strophariaceae family. While it is traditionally categorized as a saprotroph living on decaying wood, it can act as a facultative pathogen in orchards and gardens. It primarily colonizes weakened trees, causing white rot, which systematically breaks down the tree's structural integrity over time.

The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium entering the tree through bark wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, the fungus produces enzymes that decompose lignin and cellulose, the fundamental building blocks of wood. This biological degradation process drastically reduces the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients effectively.

Signs of infestation include the presence of small, characteristic mushroom caps growing from the tree trunk or near the roots. Internally, the wood becomes bleached and brittle, losing its load-bearing capacity. Externally, the tree may show signs of decline, such as yellowing foliage, thin canopies, dieback, and eventually total failure under wind pressure or heavy foliage loads.

The development and spread of Agrocybe firma are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and poor air circulation. Spores are disseminated by wind, rain, and insects, settling in any exposed plant tissues. Warm temperatures between 18°C and 25°C provide the ideal environment for the mycelium to penetrate deep into the sapwood and heartwood.

Effective management and prevention strategies involve:

  • Regular inspection of the orchard to identify early signs of fungal fruiting bodies.
  • Sanitary pruning of infected branches followed by the application of antifungal sealants.
  • Proper tree maintenance, including cleaning cavities and preventing mechanical injuries to the bark.
  • Removal and destruction of decaying stumps and dead wood that act as infection reservoirs.
  • Boosting plant vigor through appropriate fertilization to help trees resist pathogen colonization.
