The pathogen thrives by breaking down wood chips, bark, and plant debris. As the mycelial network expands, it occupies space within the upper soil horizon and the root zone. Although it does not typically act as a primary parasite, the intensity of its colonization can cause root stress, nutrient deficiency, and reduced vigor in sensitive plant species due to localized soil pH changes.

The primary indicators of presence are the emergence of small, brownish mushrooms from the soil surface or mulched areas. Plants affected by dense mats of mycelium in the root zone often display symptoms of wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth. These signs typically become more pronounced during dry periods, as the fungus competes effectively for available soil moisture.
