Agyriaceae

Agyriaceae is a family of fungi within the order Agyriales, commonly associated with lichenized forms, but also including species that colonize woody substrates. In an agricultural context, these fungi are often regarded as saprotrophs or secondary pathogens that occupy necrotic or damaged tissues on perennial plants, fruit trees, and ornamental shrubs.

The causative agent involves specific fungal species that settle on the bark, utilizing dead organic matter or the compromised tissues of living plants. This type of colonization is classified as a surface-dwelling infection that can gradually impair the plant's ability to maintain protective barriers. While not always directly lethal, their presence indicates poor plant health or favorable environmental conditions for fungal proliferation.

Symptoms typically present as small, disc-like or button-shaped apothecia emerging on the bark surface. These structures may be vibrantly colored or pigmented and are often mistaken for environmental deposits. As the infection progresses, the bark may exhibit signs of degradation, such as brittleness, cracking, or premature peeling, which creates entry points for more aggressive primary pathogens.

The development of Agyriaceae is highly dependent on environmental moisture and the availability of suitable substrates. They thrive in humid, poorly ventilated areas where moisture remains trapped on the surface of branches for extended periods. Dissemination occurs primarily through wind-borne spores, which easily land on damaged or stressed trees in orchards or plantations.

Effective management and protection strategies rely on preventive cultural practices. Key measures include maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, timely pruning to remove deadwood, and ensuring adequate light penetration to allow foliage and branches to dry quickly. If infestation becomes severe, localized application of copper-based fungicides can help eradicate the colonies and protect the bark integrity.
