The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Aithaloderma clavatisporum, which belongs to the group of sooty molds. It is an epiphytic pathogen that does not penetrate plant tissues but colonizes the surface, feeding on the honeydew secreted by various sucking insects.
The primary hosts of this fungus are citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The disease frequently appears in orchards or greenhouses where infestations of aphids, scales, or whiteflies are poorly managed, as these insects provide the essential nutrient base for the fungal mycelium.
The symptoms of the infection are characterized by the appearance of a dark, sooty-black coating on the surface of leaves, shoots, and fruits.
