Akanthomyces is a genus of entomopathogenic fungi renowned for their ability to parasitize and kill various species of insects and mites. The infection process begins when fungal spores adhere to the insect's cuticle. After germination, the fungal mycelium penetrates the host's body and colonizes its internal tissues, depriving the host of nutrients and releasing secondary metabolites that lead to the insect's death within a few days.
