Akanthomyces lecanii is an entomopathogenic fungus widely recognized in agronomy as a beneficial biological control agent rather than a plant pathogen. It was formerly classified under the genera Lecanicillium and Verticillium, and it acts as a parasitic organism that effectively targets a variety of soft-bodied insects.
This fungus is primarily utilized in greenhouse environments to protect crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and various ornamental plants. By targeting major pests like whiteflies, aphids, and scale insects, it significantly reduces the economic damage caused by these infestations without posing a risk to the plants themselves.
The infection process begins when fungal spores adhere to the insect's cuticle. Upon germination, the hyphae penetrate the host, consuming its internal tissues and releasing specific toxins. The hallmark sign of infection is the emergence of a white to cream-colored mycelial mat that completely covers the cadaver of the deceased insect.
Environmental requirements are critical for the success of this biocontrol agent. The fungus thrives in high-humidity conditions (typically above 85% relative humidity) and moderate temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. In dry environments, the effectiveness of the treatment is severely limited, making irrigation and humidity management essential for success.
From an agronomic perspective, Akanthomyces lecanii is a key component of sustainable and organic pest management. To integrate it successfully, growers should avoid using broad-spectrum synthetic fungicides that might inadvertently kill the beneficial fungus, and ensure that the pest population is monitored regularly to apply the treatment at the early stages of infestation.
