Albatrellaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Russulales. While most members of this family are mycorrhizal symbionts interacting with tree roots, certain species can exhibit saprotrophic properties, causing wood degradation within forest ecosystems.

The destructive process is initiated by the fungal mycelium, which penetrates the root system or the base of the tree trunk. The type of pathology is classified as root rot, which renders the trees susceptible to windthrow and reduces their overall resistance to adverse environmental factors.

These fungi primarily affect coniferous tree species such as spruce and pine. Symptoms include the emergence of fruiting bodies in the root collar zone, premature yellowing of needles, reduced annual growth, and the gradual dieback of the tree canopy's upper section.

Conditions favorable for the development of Albatrellaceae include high soil moisture, the presence of significant organic debris, and moderate temperature ranges. Spore dispersal occurs via wind, while the mycelium actively colonizes weakened root areas, entering living plant tissue through cracks and mechanical injuries.

The damage caused by these fungi involves the gradual decomposition of the root system, leading to tree mortality and substantial economic losses in forestry. Protection measures include the sanitary removal of infected trees, clearing the forest floor of deadwood, and ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent the waterlogging that encourages mycelial growth.
