Albatrellus peckianus is a fungal species that acts as a pathogen causing heart rot and root decay in various tree species. As a wood-decay fungus, it primarily targets trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, drought, or previous mechanical injuries to the root system, eventually compromising the structural integrity of the host.
The disease is characterized by the breakdown of complex structural polymers within the wood. The pathogen secretes lignocellulolytic enzymes that degrade the cellular structure of the tree, resulting in progressive softening and discoloration. This decay process usually begins in the roots or the base of the trunk, gradually spreading upwards into the heartwood.
Visible symptoms include the development of fleshy, multi-capped or single fruiting bodies at the base of infected trees. Physiological signs of decline in the host tree include chlorosis, reduced needle or leaf density, crown dieback, and an increased susceptibility to secondary pests due to the loss of systemic vigor.
The spread and development of the fungus are favored by moist, poorly drained soils and high humidity, which create optimal conditions for mycelial expansion. Spores are released from the fruiting bodies and dispersed via wind and water, colonizing nearby trees through fresh wounds, bark cracks, or root-to-root contact in forest stands.
The impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to increased timber decay and higher risks of tree failure (windthrow). Preventive management strategies include:
- Regular inspection of forest stands to identify early symptoms.
- Removal and proper disposal of infected stumps and woody debris.
- Avoiding mechanical injury to the trunks during maintenance works.
- Improving soil drainage to discourage fungal colonization.
