Albifimbria is a genus of fungi formerly classified under the Myrothecium complex. These fungal pathogens are responsible for causing severe necrosis and rot in a wide variety of plant species. As an aggressive phytopathogen, it is capable of causing significant economic losses in both commercial agriculture and horticultural settings.

The disease is caused by hyphomycete fungi, which act as necrotrophic pathogens. They derive nutrients from decaying tissues, actively breaking down the plant's structural components through the secretion of specialized enzymes. The infection generally results in various forms of leaf spots, stem blights, and root rots, depending on the host plant.

A broad range of crops, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and many ornamentals like begonia and violet, are susceptible to Albifimbria infections. The fungus often attacks seedlings during germination, causing "damping-off," or establishes itself in mature plants, leading to severe wilting and eventual plant death if environmental conditions favor the pathogen.

Symptoms are typically characterized by necrotic lesions that appear dark brown or black. A key indicator of the presence of this fungus is the development of white or creamy-colored spore clusters, known as sporodochia, which emerge on the necrotic spots. These structures contain masses of conidia, which are easily disseminated to surrounding healthy tissue.

The development and spread of Albifimbria are strictly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus thrives in moist conditions where poor air circulation is present, such as in crowded greenhouse environments. Spores are primarily dispersed through water splashing, contaminated tools, or infested soil, making sanitation a critical aspect of disease management.
