Albifimbria verrucaria is a soil-borne fungal pathogen, historically known as Myrothecium verrucaria, which causes significant damage to a wide range of agricultural crops. It is responsible for various diseases, including crown rot, stem necrosis, and severe leaf spotting, often leading to total crop failure if left unmanaged.
This pathogen has a broad host range, infecting many vegetable, pulse, and ornamental plants. It is particularly devastating to seedlings and young transplants, where the high susceptibility of the plant tissues allows the fungus to rapidly colonize and kill the host within a very short period of time under favorable conditions.
Symptoms are typically characterized by the appearance of water-soaked lesions that progress into necrotic spots. A distinguishing feature is the formation of white to greyish sporulation structures on the surface of the lesions. Infected stems often develop sunken, dark cankers that weaken the structural integrity of the plant, causing wilting and collapse.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High humidity and moderate to warm temperatures are ideal for the fungal growth and spore dispersal. The fungus is highly resilient and can persist in soil, on plant debris, or on contaminated tools, making it a persistent challenge in greenhouses and field production alike.
Disease management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize losses. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation, maintaining strict sanitation in growing areas, ensuring proper drainage to prevent excessive humidity, and the use of certified disease-free seeds. In severe cases, targeted fungicide applications are necessary to contain the spread and protect healthy plants.
