Description

Albonectria is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Hypocreales, responsible for causing serious necrotic diseases in the bark and cambium of various woody plants. As a necrotrophic pathogen, it invades the host tissue, disrupting the vascular system and eventually leading to the localized or systemic death of branches. Its presence is often associated with opportunistic infections that take hold after the plant's natural defenses have been compromised.

The disease primarily targets fruit trees such as apple and pear, as well as several ornamental and forest hardwood species. It is particularly devastating in nurseries and young plantations where trees are susceptible to environmental stress, including frost cracks and sunscald, which provide easy access for fungal spores to penetrate the bark.

Clinical signs of Albonectria infection include depressed, discolored lesions on the bark, which may eventually crack or peel away. Close inspection of these sites during humid weather often reveals the presence of small, characteristic perithecia — spore-bearing structures. As the infection progresses, affected branches show signs of wilting, premature leaf drop, and dieback, significantly hindering the tree's vigor.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this pathogen include high humidity, stagnant air, and moderate temperatures, which are ideal for spore production and germination. The spores are typically dispersed by splashing rain, wind, and movement of pruning tools or insects. The fungus overwinters within the infected host tissue, waiting for favorable conditions in the spring to release new inoculum.

Management of Albonectria requires a rigorous sanitation strategy. Infected branches must be pruned well below the site of infection and destroyed to limit further contamination. Disinfecting pruning tools between cuts is essential to prevent horizontal transmission. Chemical control using copper-based fungicides during the dormant season serves as an effective preventative measure, while maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization and pest management helps the host resist potential infections.
