Description

White blister rust is a significant plant disease caused by oomycetes in the order Albuginales. These pathogens are obligate parasites that penetrate plant tissues, forming a complex network that draws nutrients from the host, which weakens the plant and stunts its overall physiological growth.

This disease primarily attacks plants belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Major agricultural crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, radish, and oilseed rape are highly susceptible. Besides cultivated crops, wild mustard and other cruciferous weeds can harbor the pathogen, serving as a secondary infection source.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, white, circular pustules on the underside of leaves. As the infection progresses, these pustules rupture, releasing spores. Severe infestations often lead to significant hypertrophy, where the infected stems or floral parts become distorted and swollen.

The development of Albuginales is heavily dependent on moisture. Cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity promote the production and dispersal of zoospores. The disease spreads rapidly through splashing rain or overhead irrigation, which carries spores from diseased leaves to healthy ones in a very short period.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative measures and chemical interventions. Cultural practices, such as deep plowing to bury infested debris and careful management of cruciferous weeds, are fundamental. When conditions are conducive to disease, applying fungicides helps to protect vulnerable stages of crop development.
