Aleuria rhenana is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, known primarily for its impact on various plant species in forest and garden environments. Although primarily saprotrophic, under conditions of plant stress, it can behave as a facultative parasite, causing structural damage to woody plant tissues and interfering with nutrient uptake.

The primary pathogen affects the lower parts of the stem and the root collar of sensitive plants. This fungal disease typically manifests through the breakdown of the bark and cambium layers. As the infection progresses, the disruption of the vascular system leads to a gradual decline in the host plant's vigor, often resulting in yellowing foliage and branch dieback.

Key symptoms include the emergence of characteristic orange to reddish, cup-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) around the base of the infected plant. Before these bodies appear, gardeners may observe discolored bark, oozing lesions, or a general thinning of the canopy. The presence of these fruiting bodies is a clear indicator that the fungal network has established deep within the plant tissues.

Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly high moisture levels and cool, temperate climates. The fungus thrives in shaded areas with heavy leaf litter, as these conditions provide the necessary humidity for spore germination. Poor soil drainage significantly increases the susceptibility of plants to this specific pathogen.
