Aleurodiscus is a genus of basidiomycete fungi recognized as a pathogen responsible for cortical diseases and wood rot in various tree species. These fungi are predominantly found on the bark and trunk of affected trees, where they establish colonies that disrupt the normal transport of nutrients and lead to the degradation of woody tissues.

The host range of Aleurodiscus includes diverse coniferous and broad-leaved trees. Infection typically begins when fungal spores enter through wounds, cracks in the bark, or pruning sites. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deeper into the bark layers, eventually compromising the tree's health and creating necrotic zones that prevent effective recovery.

The primary clinical signs of this disease involve the development of disk-shaped, crust-like fruiting bodies on the bark surface. These bodies are often characterized by their smooth or slightly folded appearance and colors ranging from white to reddish-pink. Adjacent to these fruiting structures, the bark often exhibits discoloration, splitting, or softening.

The spores are primarily wind-dispersed, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly within a woodland or orchard during rainy seasons. Poor ventilation in dense plantings significantly contributes to the speed of the infection process.

The economic and ecological impact of Aleurodiscus is significant, as it leads to tree decline, reduced growth rates, and structural damage to the timber. Infected trees become vulnerable to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects, further exacerbating the decline. If left unmanaged, the cumulative damage can result in premature tree mortality.
