Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Allophoma piperis, a specialized pathogen that affects various members of the Solanaceae family. This fungus thrives by colonizing the leaf tissue, leading to localized cell death and the formation of characteristic necrotic spots that impair the plant's health.
The primary host for this pathogen is the pepper plant (Capsicum annuum). It frequently impacts both greenhouse-grown and open-field peppers, especially in regions with high precipitation or intensive irrigation practices that create a favorable microclimate for fungal proliferation.
Clinical signs of the infection appear as distinct spots on the foliage. These lesions often exhibit a dark center with a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, the spots may coalesce, leading to extensive leaf damage, chlorosis, and premature senescence of the foliage, which ultimately weakens the plant.
Epidemiology of Allophoma piperis is driven by environmental factors, particularly prolonged leaf wetness and high relative humidity. The fungus produces pycnidia, which release spores that are disseminated by water splashes, wind, and contact, allowing the disease to spread rapidly throughout a crop canopy.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves maximizing air circulation, maintaining plant hygiene to remove inoculum, and applying appropriate protective fungicides. Crop rotation remains a critical strategy to ensure the soil does not harbor spores for the following season.
