Allophoma tropica is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing necrotic lesions and spotting on various agricultural crops. Classified as a member of the Dothideomycetes class, this fungus was formerly associated with the Phoma complex. It is primarily a pathogen that affects the vegetative parts of host plants, disrupting photosynthesis and leading to a significant loss of leaf surface area, which ultimately impacts the plant's overall development and yield potential.
The host range of Allophoma tropica includes diverse plant species, particularly within the Asteraceae family and other broadleaf crops. It can infect stems, leaves, and occasionally stalks, depending on the host's phenological stage. The disease is characterized as a localized necrosis, but if environmental conditions are favorable, it can become widespread throughout the canopy, causing severe stress to the entire plant.
Key symptoms include the appearance of irregular, dark-bordered spots on the foliage. As the disease advances, the centers of these lesions may turn necrotic, often showing greyish or tan centers containing tiny, black, flask-shaped structures known as pycnidia. These fruiting bodies are the primary diagnostic feature used by agronomists to identify the infection in the field, as they release conidia during humid conditions.
Development and spread of this disease are heavily driven by environmental humidity and temperature. Allophoma tropica thrives in warm, wet conditions where water film remains on leaves for extended periods. Conidia are disseminated by rain splash, overhead irrigation, and wind, allowing the pathogen to move quickly between plants and from crop residues to new seedlings. Dense planting patterns often exacerbate the spread by creating a favorable microclimate.
Management and prevention require a rigorous integrated approach to minimize the risk of yield loss:
- Implementing strict crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pathogen life cycle.
- Sanitation practices, including the deep burial or removal of crop debris after harvest.
- Applying preventative fungicides, particularly those belonging to the triazole or strobilurin groups.
- Choosing resistant or tolerant crop varieties when available.
- Maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
